Food For Thought

If you want to see the effect of this recession first-hand, why don't you go to your favorite restaurant? Chances are the place will be a ghost town. At ChangeWave, the Alliance Research Network tracks restaurant spending very closely, because it is typically one of the first areas where we see a falloff in spending before an economic downturn. And, historically, restaurant spending is also one of the first areas to improve when the economy begins to recover. As you've probably guessed from the headline, it does not appear that a recovery is in sight yet. But keep reading to find out which restaurant chains look like they'll be the most starved for business.

By Paul Carton and Jim Woods

It's been a rough ride lately for the U.S. economy, and nowhere has this been more evident than at your favorite restaurant.

According to ChangeWave's December consumer survey, it looks like more belt-tightening went on last month when it came to dining out.

Fifty-one percent of respondents said they'll be spending less money at restaurants -- an all-time high in a ChangeWave survey. Only 7% said they'll be spending more -- unchanged from November.

Among those dining out less often, 47% said it's because they're saving more money -- 25 points higher than our September survey. At the same time, there has been a 10-point increase in the percentage of consumers who said they're eating more meals at home (48%).

But which types of restaurant chains are getting hit the hardest? And are there any categories showing signs of improvement?

Keep reading to find out.

(1) Lone Microsoft Holdout

GSC08849: "In my family, I was the lone holdout in the Microsoft (MSFT) versus Apple (AAPL) operating system (OS) battle. Then, just before Christmas, I got hit with a virus even with my firewall and anti-virus/anti-spam software. Now I am making the move to the Mac OS. I will use Apple's Boot Camp for everything that requires Windows."

(2) Long-Lasting Cree LEDs

SAM99352 writes: "I recently bought a flashlight with Cree's (CREE) LED light bulb and three AAA batteries. After using it for more than 60 hours, the light is still bright -- much more efficient than the traditional bulbs. Cree has many types of LEDs for different purposes, and I think the market could be huge."

(3) Done With Dick's Sporting Goods?

WIL12970 writes: "I live in Mississippi and work in Memphis, Tenn., and each time I visit Wal-Mart (WMT) or Costco (COST), they are packed -- even on my lunch hour. On the other hand, every time I drive by Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) the parking lot is empty -- sometimes with as few as five cars."

(4) Drop in Display Advertising

DST06997 writes: "A variety of sources are reporting drop-offs in estimated first-quarter advertising spending for 'display' ads. The sector appeared reasonably healthy as marketers spent their remaining 2008 budgets, but now it looks like they may have lower budgets for 2009. This may impact Yahoo (YHOO), ValueClick (VCLK) and The New York Times Co. (NYT), among others."
