Stem Cells Discovered In Amniotic Fluid

(MEDICAL CHANGEQUAKE) -- Scientists found stem cells in amniotic fluid, a discovery that would allow them to get around the controversy over destroying embryos for research. They extracted the stem cells from the fluid without harm to mother or fetus and turned it into several different tissue cell types, including brain, liver and bone. But stem cell researchers said scientists still don't know exactly how many different cell types can be made from the stem cells found in amniotic fluid.

Bill Would Require Medicare Price Negotiation

(REGULATORY CHANGEQUAKE) -- U.S. House of Representatives Democrats introduced legislation that would require the health secretary to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs covered by the Medicare insurance program for the elderly and disabled. A House floor vote is expected on Jan. 12.

Comcast Recorder Boxes To Get TiVo

(CORPORATE CHANGEQUAKE) -- TiVo Inc. and Comcast Corp. revealed what will come from their 2005 agreement to work together: A cable box that runs TiVo's digital-video-recorder software. The collaboration between the largest U.S. cable operator and TiVo has been considered one of the most significant deals for the DVR pioneer. TiVo has been facing tough competition against a growing number of less-expensive DVRs from cable and satellite TV operators, including Comcast.
