U.S. Bill Would Give FDA Path For Generic Biologics
(REGULATORY CHANGEQUAKE) -- The FDA would have a legal path to approve cheaper, generic copies of biotech medicines under legislation unveiled by U.S. lawmakers.
Biologic drugs are made from living cells -- not synthesized from chemicals like conventional prescription drugs -- and some biologics cost patients tens of thousands of dollars annually. Authors of the new bill said it would give the FDA clear authority to approve generic biologics after patents expire, without requiring makers to repeat the clinical trials done by brand-name companies.
