Best Service Doesn't Equal the Most Customers

A recent ChangeWave survey on cell phone trends looked at which of the cellular services providers has the most market share and which one has the happiest customers. And while you'd think that the provider with the highest customer satisfaction rating would be the one with the largest market share, that's not the case (and we think we know why). Keep reading to find out how AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), Sprint Nextel (S) and T-Mobile ranked, and to learn what could be in store for these companies in 2009.

By Paul Carton and Jim Woods

The latest ChangeWave survey on cellular service providers shows the battle between AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) is raging on.

The Dec. 9-15 survey asked 3,800 respondents to identify their current cellular service provider, and AT&T topped the list with 31% -- up one point from the previous survey in September. Verizon (30%) came in a very close second, also up one point.

Sprint Nextel (S) (down one point to 10%) and T-Mobile (unchanged with 10%) remain at the rear of the pack.

When it comes to customer satisfaction, however, it's a whole different story. The battle isn't even close.

Keep reading to learn whose customers are the happiest.

(1) We're Done, Charlie Brown

CRU10536 writes: "We used to enjoy dining at Charlie Brown's Steakhouse, a mid-range restaurant with a nice atmosphere. During the last six months, the quality of the service and food has gone down greatly. In the span of one and a half hours, about five tables sent their food back and at least two had reduced bills courtesy of the manager. So, we have decided we are done with this place. You would think with the economy, they would be striving for better service and meals."

(2) Housing Oversupply Problem

DAR02783 writes: "As a real estate appraiser in California, I have a finger on the pulse of sales, refinancing and new home starts. While some reports are suggesting inventory is decreasing slightly and applications for refinancing are up, I can tell you it's not making a dent in the oversupply problem. The people who need to refinance the most can't qualify due to lower credit and/or not enough equity for the loan-to-value requirements. And the government-sponsored entities (GSEs) -- like Fannie Mae (FNM) -- can't help the situation."

(3) The iPhone and AT&T

WIL29401 writes: "Unfortunately, the Apple (AAPL) iPhone is limited to AT&T's (T) wireless service, which is problematic in our part of the world [Tucson, Ariz.], as well as in many cities I've done business in -- frequently dropping calls and providing generally poor reception. Despite the iPhone's obvious advantages and technology, I refuse to pay a penalty for every one of our phones to switch to an inferior signal provider.

"Additionally, iPhone service is more costly than competitive offerings for the functions I use, but I can't get the iPhone without the whole bundle! What ever happened to 'have it your way' -- after all, we are the customers, but that doesn't seem to hold much sway in the cell phone world."

(4) Avastin and Macular Degeneration

RED95566 writes: "Avastin [from Genentech (DNA)] is gaining a reputation for its successful use in treating macular degeneration and retinal vein occlusion. Beneficiaries of this treatment -- an innovative use of Avastin and steroids -- have regained vision that was once virtually wiped out."
