Motorola Continues Its Slide
Immediately following Apple's first announcement of the original iPhone in January 2007, a ChangeWave survey showed that Motorola (MOT) was likely to take the biggest hit. At that time, our survey showed MOT falling a whopping nine points among planned purchasers to its lowest level in the past 18 months.
Subsequent ChangeWave surveys during the following year and a half tracked the collapse of Motorola's market share.
ChangeWave's latest cell phone findings, gathered from surveys conducted in June, show Motorola continuing to lose ground. Currently, the company registers just a 7% market share among buyers who plan to purchase a new cell phone in the next six months.
Here's a look at the survey results for Motorola during the past 13 ChangeWave surveys. Note the arrow in the chart representing the results of the survey we conducted immediately following Steve Jobs' initial iPhone announcement, which marked the beginning of Motorola's dramatic market share decline.

And here's a look at Motorola's stock chart for this time period:

In sum, while the original Apple iPhone sent ripples through the entire cell phone industry, no other company has been as adversely affected as Motorola.
And the launch of the 3G iPhone is not exactly good news for the company. |
